Is the Open Range Breakout (ORB) strategy really as profitable as the gurus claim?

To find out, I built an advanced trading robot and backtested ORB on the S&P 500 over a full 12-month cycle. Risking 1% per trade at a 1:2 risk-to-reward ratio, the classic breakout + retest model returned:
📉 +19.7% net profit if every trade was taken.

But with just a few optimized entry tweaks, I boosted results to:
📈 +51.5% net profit using a market order on the 4th consecutive 3-minute candle close above/below the range.

This shows why mechanical backtesting is so powerful — it helps uncover hidden price action patterns and refine strategies for higher probability outcomes.
