Barbells are the optimal training tool to emphasize if you want to reach your true genetic potential. Every so often people come along and hate on the classic barbell. These people often use flashy and smart sounding scientific terminology to pull the wool over your eyes and convince you that some obscure dumbbell exercise will do more for long term growth than the tried and true classics. They stir the pot for the sake of attention. They promote flash over substance simply in order to tickle the balls of the algorithm and gain attention in a highly saturated market space. Which in turn confuses a great many people who are just trying to get bigger and stronger, and sets many of these people down the path of being eternal noobs. Which is a d*mn shame.

So today we are going to talk about barbells of all varieties, and in order to counter some of the recent barbell hate we're going to make a case for why these bars are the primary tool that you should be emphasizing in your training by contrasting barbell training against two other widely used strength and hypertrophy modalities: dumbbell training and machine based training. Analyzing a concept that I refer to as the "stability continuum," it becomes quite clear that barbells exist as a happy medium on the spectrum, the tool with the greatest potential to induce the greatest amount of strength and hypertrophy, while also making the rest of your work (dumbbells, machines, cables, calisthenics, etc.) much more productive in the long run as well.
