A Black-rumped Flameback (Dinopium benghalense), also known as the Lesser Golden-backed Woodpecker.


This woodpecker species is widely distributed throughout the Indian subcontinent and is one of the few woodpeckers commonly seen in urban areas. 
It can be identified by its golden back, black rump, black throat, and the lack of a contrasting black horizontal stripe below the cheek, differentiating it from other flameback species. 
Black-rumped Flamebacks have a characteristic rattling-whinnying call that increases in pace before ending in a trill. 
They are primarily insectivores, with ants forming a significant part of their diet, and are also known to catch slow-flying insects in the air. 
Their specialized foot morphology, with three toes, allows them to move efficiently on tree trunks while foraging.

The Black-rumped Flameback is a relatively large woodpecker, measuring 26 to 29 cm (10-11 inches) in length. It is known for its striking appearance, including a black rump and throat, golden yellow wings, and a white body with dark chevron markings.
