‘We cannot afford a 2nd Geno,’ Ben Leong announces 5 BTC fund to counter defamation lawfare

Associate Professor Dr Ben Leong has announced a S$600,000 Defamation Lawfare Defence Fund to support individuals targeted by defamation lawsuits.

The fund, established with the donation of five bitcoins from a former student, aims to alleviate financial and emotional burdens, particularly for victims unable to afford legal defence.

Leong, currently facing a defamation suit from Iris Koh of the “Healing the Divide” group, highlighted systemic injustices in Singapore’s legal system, including its susceptibility to misuse for oppression.

He warned about a troubling rise in self-represented litigants exploiting defamation laws and urged reforms to prevent harm while preserving access to justice.

By offering financial assistance and potential restitution to victims, the fund seeks to mitigate the damaging consequences of defamation lawsuits and promote fairness in the legal process.
