The Byford Dolphin diving bell tragedy - November 5, 1983
Four divers were completing a deep-sea saturation dive in the North Sea when a catastrophic accident occurred. A diving bell hatch was opened prematurely while still pressurized at 9 atmospheres.
The instant decompression was fatal. All four divers and one dive tender died within seconds. The extreme pressure differential caused devastating injuries—one victim was expelled through a 60cm opening.
A single human error. Five lives lost in an instant.
This remains one of the deadliest diving accidents in offshore history, leading to major safety reforms in the industry.
