As many grassroots NGOs will be familiar with, a number of volunteer teachers are not TOEFL-certified. That is not to say that they are not qualified to lead courses in these informal education settings. Many will be professional educators experienced in other fields, who need help translating their classroom protocols to meet the specific needs of their new students. And the rest are highly-motivated amateurs who possess the most essential skill for any language class: native fluency. This session is primarily an open discussion among trained and untrained teachers, coordinators volunteers, talking about their experiences, challenges and successes in the classroom, and what we can all learn from each other.



Our host for this webinar, Tim Anderson, teaches courses in American Studies and Composition at Pace University in New York City. He earned his PhD at New York University, MA at the New School for Social Research, and AB at Harvard, and also studied at the University of St Andrews and Central European University, Budapest. From 2017-19, he spent each summer teaching English to asylum seekers on the Greek island of Samos.
