Phantom Auto, the leading provider of teleoperation safety technology for AVs, is paving the way for safer streets by demonstrating the first fully driverless drives on public roads in four major California cities.

On March 2, California’s Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) mandated the use of teleoperation technology for driverless testing. Starting April 2, AV companies can now test without a safety driver physically in the vehicle, as long as they are using teleoperation technology. As of today, Phantom Auto has demonstrated that it can do fully driverless drives powered by its teleoperation technology in cities such as Sacramento, San Francisco, San Jose, and Mountain View.

It is vitally important that lifesaving AVs get tested and deployed on public roads in California rapidly and at scale, but it is imperative that that testing and deployment is optimally safe. By utilizing Phantom Auto’s teleoperation safety technology, driverless AVs will still have a human in the loop who can take over control of the vehicle in the event the vehicle cannot operate safely.
