The Quickest Way to Value Your Early Stage Startup

Early stage startup valuations are principally just based on what you as the Founder and the Investor agree on. No amount of future cash flow projections at an idea or early traction stage can do justice to the real value of the business.

In such a case, the best method to get an investor to agree on the valuation you propose is by building Transaction Comparables, also known as Market Comps.

Here’s how you do it.

1/ Write a Profile of your Startup on the following criteria:
a) Industry
b) Location
c) Target customer
d) B2B or B2C
e) Stage of Development
f) Customer Traction Data
g) Founder experience

2/ Look for Startups similar to your profile who have recently raised funds. This info is available through public reports on platforms such as:
a) TechCrunch
b) CrunchBase
c) Hacker News
d) The Cap Table
e) Tracxn

3/ Sit with your CA and fetch out details on Valuation and Investment Amount raised, plus list of all investors by downloading all of the target startup’s MCA forms, and then reading the attachments on Form PAS-3, PAS-4, SH-7, AOA, etc

4/ If your startup is exactly comparable to the target, you could show that if X is valued at USD 50 Million, why not us (Y). This means, depending on how you compare to their profile, you may have some premium or discount on their valuation too.
