Bhaktapur (भक्तपुर) the ‘City of Culture’, is considered the most well preserved of the three cities that make up the Kathmandu Valley in Nepal. With courtyards and monuments listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites, this ancient city was once the capital of the Valley, and is now one of the top locations people visit on their trip to Nepal.

Among the three major cities of Kathmandu Valley, Bhaktapur retains some of its ancient way of life, reminding you of what the entire Kathmandu Valley must have looked like during the medieval period. The remarkable architecture, the exquisite woodcarvings and metal craft that can be seen around the city takes one back to the time of the Malla rulers who patronized art like no other dynasty. The pagoda style temples rise above the Bhaktapur skyline. The Pottery Square, the Palace (Durbar) Square which dates back to the 12th century, where devotees still celebrate their centuries old festivals and the temple squares that still remain vibrant, are Bhaktapur’s major attractions. But the city’s archaic look itself draws tourists besides the elaborate festivals that remain unchanged for centuries. The Durbar Square is one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites of the valley.

By Air

The closest airport from Bhaktapur is the Tribhuvan International Airport located in Kathmandu. One can choose to fly in to the airport from all top destinations in the world and in to the domestic terminal of the capital from any major city in Nepal. Bhaktapur is a mere 13 km away from Kathmandu and can be reached via road routes upon landing in the capital.

By Road
There are regular buses operating between Kathmandu and Bhaktapur. The mini bus runs from Ratna bus stand and Ring Road stand in Kathmandu and drops off at Kamal Binayak stand in Bhaktapur; the bigger buses drop off at Chyamasingha stop.
