In a major development, the Supreme Court has stayed the implementation of the UGC Equity Regulations 2026, keeping them in abeyance and restoring the 2012 regulations. The top court said the new rules are prima facie vague and capable of misuse, warning that they could divide society and have a dangerous impact if allowed to operate.

Chief Justice Surya Kant said experts must re-examine the language of the regulations to prevent exploitation. The Centre has been asked to redraft the rules. The stay comes amid petitions alleging discrimination against general category students, even as Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin backed the intent of the regulations while flagging concerns over institutional apathy.
