5 HEALTH ISSUES OF SAINT BERNARDS:

NUMBER 1: Their Droopy eyes lead them to get either Entropion or Ectropion of their Eyes.

Entropion is where the eyelids roll inwards, causing the eyelashes and surrounding hair to rub against the cornea which can cause eye irritation or corneal ulcers to occur.

Ectropion is where the eyelids roll outwards and cause excessive droopiness that expose the conjunctival tissue and also leads to drying of the eyeballs causes dry eye and eye irritation.

Both of these conditions can be fixed by a veterinarian to correct the eyelids. You may need to seek a veterinary ophthalmology specialist to do these specialized eye surgeries and you want them done right.

NUMBER 2: Hip and Elbow dysplasia. Joint Dysplasias is very common in large breed dogs due to a genetic predisposition during their growth stage. Over time these dogs develop arthritis that is painful and can be life threatening to them when they cannot walk to use the bathroom.

A few ways to prevent severe arthritis in large breed dogs is to keep their weight down with regular exercise and diet and to use joint supplements. And with large breed dogs its not a matter of if it’s a matter of when your veterinarian will start prescribing anti-inflammatories to keep them comfortable.

NUMBER 3: Neck Hot Spots
Saint Bernards are prone to skin infections under their neck due to their loose skin and excessive amount of drooling that keeps that area of their body wet and prone to infections.
Simply bathing that area once a week can keep the hot spots away, or some owners will even shave that hair under their chin so they can easily keep it clean.

NUMBER 4: Bloat, stomach twisting or Gastric dilation-volvulus (GDV) is common in large deep chested dogs like the Saint Bernard.
Ways to prevent this includes feeding them with a slow feeder bowl, small meals, and don’t exercise them right after eating.

NUMBER 5: Osteosarcoma
This is a malignant bone tumor or cancer that occurs more commonly in large breed dogs. The most areas these tumors like to start out at are at the knees, the shoulders, and wrists. You will notice a large hard swelling that is painful to touch and the dogs will limp. 90% of dogs will already have micrometastasis to the lungs or other tissues at the time of diagnosis. With a survival time of 3-6 months even with chemotherapy.

And Lastly, this is not a health issue but Giant Dog breeds like the Saint Bernard normally live 8 to 10 years. They have their size against them lowering their life span 4 to 6 years from the average dog. This alone deters many people from owning this dog breed.

So that’s it for the Saint Bernard, Thank you guys for watching, please subscribe to my channel and I hope to see you back here to learn more about our beloved dogs and cats!
