Color genetics and hearing loss (Part 1, the merle gene)

Color genetics are responsible for most of early onset hearing loss (dogs that are born with hearing loss). Colors are expressed in the genetics of the dog, not necessarily in the coat color (what we see). With knowledge you can avoid creating or even purchasing a dog with color related deafness. The merle gene is only one of the color genes responsible for hearing loss, there are many more and over 80 dog breeds that experience color related hearing loss.
