Thousands of NATO forces cautiously tightened their control of Kosovo on Monday, aiming to bring a measure of stability to the province shattered by war and ethnic hatred and growing evidence of ethnic massacres.

As the peacekeeping forces advanced farther into Kosovo, Yugoslav soldiers continued their mandated withdrawal and thousands of Serbs fled, mixing defiance with despair.

A prominent Serb leader in Kosovo said as many as 30-thousand Serbs were fleeing on Monday, many, like these leaving Pristina, under the watchful eye of K-FOR troops.

Meanwhile, peacekeepers continued to pour into the battered Serbian province from neighboring Macedonia and Albania, and officials said more than 14-thousand-300 allied troops had entered Kosovo by Monday morning.

These British troops outside Pristina are part of an expected British contingent of 12-thousand to be deployed in and around the Kosovo capital.
