You may catch these bass on a jerkbait one hour, then not get a bite during the next hour. They are moody fish that can go from biting aggressively to lock jaw in short order. Seasonal patterns are one of the most important thing and knowing where fish should be. When the spawn comes, smallmouth will make beds in the middle of the lake. Jerkbaits and swimbaits are key to identify where smallmouth bass are located as they react to baits. Pete also talks about floggers which are used to see down below the waves. It looks like a giant megaphone that you put in the water and you can see spawn or post spawn smallmouth better, particularly when it's windy.
