This species ranges from the Ocmulgee River in Georgia north to the Cape Fear Basin in North Carolina. This video is of a 4-year-old individual that was propagated at NC State University and reached adulthood in a hatchery setting. The larvae of freshwater mussels require attachment to a host (usually a fish) to complete their lifecycle. This unique angling behavior is used to induce their host fish into a strike. But instead of a meal, the fish gets a mouthful of mussel larvae which attach to the fish's gills to complete their lifecycle.
