On April 21, ahead of Earth Day, President Joe Biden signed an executive order formally establishing a U.S. Office of Environmental Justice. The office will work to coordinate efforts between governmental agencies and ensure that communities are notified by those agencies any time there’s a toxic material spill.

A White House statement about the announcement said, ‘For far too long, communities across our country have faced persistent environmental injustice through toxic pollution, underinvestment in infrastructure and critical services, and other disproportionate environmental harms often due to a legacy of racial discrimination.’
