I discovered this trick while playing around with my Jedi holocron from Star Wars Galaxy's Edge in Disneyland. Disconnecting the internal battery of the holocron and then powering the holocron using only the micro USB port the Jedi holocron boots up as a Sith holocron. If you then reconnect the battery while it's still powered via the USB port and then disconnect the USB cable it will remain a Sith holocron until the holocron is reset. It can be reset by disconnecting and then reconnecting the batter while it is NOT powered via the USB port. This trick does not work with Sith holocrons.
