Paddon and Pennick play 'Jarmara', named for another imp 'discovered' by the Witch-Finder General Matthew Hopkins. This round of witch-hunts occurred within the shadow of devastating European wars, the Thirty Years' War in central Europe (1618-1648) and the first English Civil War. Both wars had religious fanaticism as an element. In 1644 Prince Rupert's dog, Boy, was shot at the Battle of Marston Moor. It was said that the dog, which had participated in several battles, was Rupert's 'familiar', an evil spirit in the shape of a dog. Witchfinders like Hopkins claimed that pets and household animals were in reality the Devil's imps given to the witch for the purpose of doing evil things to innocent people. Possession of an unusual or well-trained animal was suspect and could lead to the torture and death of its owner. Jarmara is only one of many. The video begins with 'Prince Rupert's March' played on viola and mountain dulcimer. Jarmara is played on theorbo lute and mountain dulcimer.
