Would you want to live on this unique island? An island full of stories, whose inhabitants have achieved incredible things. They wrote several books in Irish and created a body of work that cannot be forgotten.

The guided tour of the island and the history of its inhabitants not only took me back to a time long gone - surrounded by Irish people, I had to stifle a smile when one of the books mentioned was apparently part of Irish school literature. A loud murmur went through the crowd, apparently the books were anything but easy to read.
The island had a special stillness about it today, the seals, although not on the beach, swam within easy reach. When the sun shines, it is incredibly peaceful here - who wouldn't dream of staying here? But it wasn't like that - anyone who knows the weather in Ireland knows what the locals regularly have to contend with. Cut off from all supplies for days or weeks on end during storms, they had to survive in nothing more than their tiny stone huts. Even a minor illness had devastating consequences and a young islander died. He could have been helped on the mainland, but although only a few kilometres separated the island from the mainland, quite a few people found their end in these waters. This event, among others, led to the islanders' call for help and the government initiated the evacuation of the island in 1953.

Did you know that even today there are still houses on Blasket Island that are privately owned? Unbelievable, isn't it?
