Double Trouble is a classic rapid on the Middle Ocoee, but it contains a severe under-cut hazard: the Blast Rock on the river left bank. Aspiring intermediate boaters and first-year guides often make the mistake of 'sneaking' the peel out and the diagonal hole, only to find themselves flirting with this dangerous feature.

In this technical review, I examine the Blast Rock at low water to reveal its true nature. This rock was blasted from the mountain over 110 years ago during flume line construction and has been a potential raft trap ever since. A key indicator of its danger is the broken-off drill bit from 1912 protruding from the top—a clear sign that the rock is under-cut and lacks a 'pillow' to push you away.

Safety is my priority. It is critical that the crew follows commands promptly and correctly when navigating these sections. Random, uninstructed paddling only increases the risk of incidents by throwing off the balance and steering of the raft. You're better off taking the peel out into the main current; even if you flip, the deep water there is far safer than the under-cuts on the bank.
