WHAT ARE HERBIVORES?

The organisms which consume or eat only plants as their source of food are called herbivores. These animals have evolved digestive systems capable of handling large amounts of plant material.

Their teeth also have special designs that enable them to rip off the plants and then grind them up with flat molars. As a result, they tend to eat all day in order to keep up their energy.

Herbivores can be further classified into frugivores, granivores, nectivores, folivores, xylophages, and detritivores. Frugivores are fruit-eaters, granivores are seed-eaters, nectivores are nectar feeders, folivores are leaf eaters, xylophages eat mostly wood and detritivores eat mostly dead plant material.
