Wrestlers only wear a まわし mawashi, a kind of traditional underwear, and fight almost naked so as to show they are not cheating. If you’ve ever seen sumo before, I’m sure you can imagine what they look like immediately.

But did you know that they actually never wash the mawashi no matter how much sweat it holds or how dirty it gets?

First of many reasons, it’s because washing it will damage the fabric. Especially the higher ranking sumo wrestlers’ mawashi are made from high grade silk, and could cost 700K to 1M yen.

Not washing mawashi is also meant for good luck, since it never “washes away” anything you’ve experienced or learned. But instead, they will dry them in the sun and sanitize them with alcohol. The mawashi worn during daily training get dirty more easily, so in that case they throw away the old one and buy a new one.
