In this FRIDE video, senior researcher Clare Castillejo analyses the emergence of the terrorist insurgent group Boko Haram and the impact it is having in Africa, particularly in Nigeria and neighbouring countries. The expert also puts forward some recommendations to deal with the group's violent activities.

Boko Haram is an Islamist insurgent group, whose aim is to establish an Islamist State and which rejects anything Western-related. Since 2009, the group has been responsible for a wave of attacks and violence in many public places, mostly recently the kidnapping of 200 school girls in April. Nigeria's neighbours such as Niger or Mali are also victims of this threat. According to Clare Castillejo, the poorest and most marginalised sectors of the population are most prone to join Boko Haram, due to deep grievances around political and social exclusion. The international community should up its pressure on the Nigerian government to address corruption and the need for development in the poorest areas as a way to contribute to a solution to the problem.
