Google has disabled monetization on YouTube in Russia - what to expect next, and how not to lose subscribers and money
In the heat of virtual battles, many of our readers have not noticed several key events that have the potential to change much of the flow of information, not only in Russia, but around the world. The fact is that for a long time now hundreds of millions of people all over the planet have been drawing information from social networks and messengers. In this case, it is not so important whether it is true or not. People like it, which means that fakes will multiply, bringing profit to the authors and platform owners. Exactly the same situation is with YouTube, which has become for millions of people not only a means of self-expression, but also the only source of income. Add to this the popular platforms for gamers, as well as the newfangled TickTock, which have made many bloggers not only popular, but also rich.
For years, we've been told that the status quo would remain unshaken, but the reality is that the West is now trying to put pressure on Russia in every way possible. After the loud statements of American brands, Google and Apple got involved. In this case, if Apple is only able to complicate payments with their own services, as well as create problems with access to the app store, the "Corporation of Good" can hurt ordinary users much more. Even if we do not resort to the scenario of remote blocking of smartphones (and there is such a possibility), already today the actions of Google are perceived as hostile.
For example, monetization has been completely disabled on the YouTube platform. This means that Russian bloggers will not be paid for content. This has never happened before. The authors of the videos are in complete incomprehension of what is happening, because they have come under attack from American democracy, which quite suddenly ceased to be tolerant. While bloggers hope that everything will return to normal, but it is not so. The pressure will continue, and the surest step will be the transition to Russian social networks and an analogue of the hosting service YouTube. We should not hope for Chinese sites, because they have declared their de facto neutrality, which means they can introduce similar measures under pressure from the United States. No one is saying that this will be the case, but it is better to start switching to Russian services today. Talk to your subscribers today, while you still can, because tomorrow YouTube might stop broadcasting in Russia altogether.
And there are a few obvious things to acknowledge here. First of all, this is a really painful process, because you will lose your income for a while. Secondly, there is no choice, so the sooner you do it, the shorter the transition period will be. But that's not all the news. For example, Google has already announced the complete suspension of advertising in the Russian segment of the Internet. This means that there will simply be nothing to pay for the creation of content. You will automatically begin to receive less information, and as a result, the number of technical (any other thematic) sites will decrease significantly. We already talked about this in the morning.
From our perspective, this is all just the beginning. Google will not stop at half measures. Soon the main services will be blocked, and using smartphones will become much more difficult. Functionality will be cut, because it will be impossible to download anything from the app store. We hope that it will not come to a complete lockdown. If it does happen, hundreds of millions of people will immediately move back a few decades. It will be interesting to see how Chinese companies react. It is highly likely that Xiaomi will support the sanctions, but smaller players could save the situation.
