Living in widely scattered settlements in Northern Mexico, the Rarámuri are considered the best ultraendurance runners on the planet. They frequently run up to 200 miles at a time over mountains and canyons at high elevation for the sake of communicating with other villages, hunting and transportation.

The Rarámuri are known for their incredible endurance running abilities, often running up to 200 miles at a time over mountains and canyons.
They run wearing only traditional sandals called huaraches, which have inspired scientific study into the benefits of "barefoot shoes."
Distance running is not just a daily chore for the Rarámuri, but also a spiritual pursuit, sport, and method for hunting and waging war.
They run races up steep hills and participate in sporting events like ‘rarajipari’, a relay race where balls are kicked, for days at a time without a break.
Some of these methods, along with those of the Apache and other tribes, can be found in the Nomad Functional Running Program on my website.
The Rarámuri also practice persistence hunting, pursuing prey over prolonged time and distance until it collapses from exhaustion.
Their diet is built around traditional staples of corn, bean, and squash, with deer, turkey, squirrel, and fish as primary protein sources.
The Rarámuri were one of the few tribes never conquered by the Spanish nor were they ever converted to Catholicism, mounting fierce resistance from their home high in the inaccessible mountains.
Modern threats to the tribe include water pollution from mining operations and being forced to act as runners for cartels.

Rarámuri training tactics, and with those of other tribes, served as the inspiration for the Nomad Functional Running Program available on my website. Check out the link in my BIO for more information on the program, or to find the link to my book, where you can learn more about the training of the Rarámuri and many other cultures.
