This is probably my favorite video so far! This video talks about and shows an example of teaching your deaf or hearing dog a new behavior via shaping.

Shaping is where you teach a new behavior via rewarding successive approximations. This means that you reward small steps towards an end goal behavior!

Your dog will need a solid understanding of their marker word (a word that marks the correct behavior). If your dog does not have a marker word, check out my video on Marker Training first.

I present Sydney with an object she's never seen before- a yellow ring. Before I even begin, I identify my end goal behavior as Sydney putting one paw in the ring. I am going to reward small steps towards that end goal behavior of her paw in the ring.

I start by marking and rewarding Sydney for just looking at the new object. Then moving towards it, then putting her nose by it.

Then she randomly lays down.... thats ok! She thinks that thats the behavior I want. Its not, so I just toss a treat the other way to "reset" her to re-engage with the object.

She comes back and gets the hang of it. Pawing it and interacting with it in the right ways until she finally puts her paw in the ring and holds it there!!! I definitely mark and reward that!!

If I wanted to perfect the behavior (example: hold your paw in there for 10 seconds without moving) I could by continuing to increase my criteria for rewarding the behavior.

Shaping is so fun to me because it makes the dog think and build confidence! Working on shaping helps dogs to learn to interact with new items, it builds your marker word and history of reinforcement, and it is just such a fun way to learn something new with your dog!
