Course Description:
On 11 April 2019, the International Labour Organization (ILO) will celebrate its 100th birthday. Created under the Treaty of Versailles in 1919 as part of the League of Nations, the ILO went on to become a specialized United Nations agency charged with the promotion of social justice and labour rights. Founded on the conviction that “universal and lasting peace can be established only if it is based upon social justice”, the ILO has pursued the improvement of working conditions worldwide, largely – but not exclusively – through international labour standard-setting and monitoring.

Canada holds a special place in the ILO’s history: Canada offered the ILO refuge during WWII. The ILO was thus housed at McGill University, in Montreal, from 1940 to 1948. During that time, the ILO prepared a post-war future, including paths in which international labour law could accompany decolonization.

The contemporary global environment makes the ILO’s 1944 social justice objectives seem every bit as relevant, urgent and inspiring. Taught by leading visiting lecturers on transnational labour law and the ILO, this seminar is an opportunity to offer critical reflections on the transnational future of international labour law.
