Note-Able Music Therapy Services creates lasting change in the lives of people of all abilities through music, by addressing people's mental, social, and physical health needs with adaptive music, community-based performance opportunities, music therapy, and neurologic music therapy.
NMTS began as a group with 12 participants in 2003, and now is serving hundreds of people a year and no end in sight for the growth. We're grateful to our community who's made it all happen, from volunteers, board members, donors, funders, staff, audience members, families, and participants.
.......................
In the late 90s, founder and executive director of NMTS, Manal Toppozada, moved to Reno with her husband from California. As a music therapist and lifelong musician, she immediately recognized the lack of access many people had to music, especially people with disabilities. So, she started a class for people with disabilities, which quickly turned into a band. The Note-Ables were born with an agenda to change the face of disability wherever they play. But Manal realized that no matter how amazing the band was, there were so many people who could benefit from music therapy and opportunities to perform and express themselves. There was just nothing like it in town. So, with a little trepidation and a big push from members of the community who knew something really unique and important was starting to happen, Note-Able Music Therapy Services began its journey as an organization.
Since 2003, it has gone from a band for adults with disabilities to a non-profit serving and touching the lives of over 1400 people a year of all abilities, all ages and all walks of life. From providing music therapy to individuals and small groups, to adaptive music and dance programs, the stories NMTS has collected along the way tell us that the needs they are meeting, whether physical, mental or social are not only important, but are vital to a healthy community.
When a piano teacher quits because a child with autism doesn’t learn like everyone else, or a teacher doesn’t allow a student to perform in the talent show because they don’t see that student’s ability or potential, NMTS makes sure that people who are overlooked are seen and celebrated. Because everyone has something to offer. With the help of NMTS music therapists, people struggling with mental illness and addiction have been able discover their self-worth, ease their anxiety and find ways to express themselves. After working with a music therapist for only a few weeks, a woman who hadn’t spoken since her stroke was able to sing “happy birthday” to her grandson through the incredible tools music provides.
Today, NMTS is reaching farther than ever before into the community, continuing on a path to create lasting change in peoples’ lives through music. Through collaborations with healthcare organizations, and working with underserved populations, NMTS is on the ground floor in the practice and knowledge that the arts are an essential part of the healthcare system. In 2018, NMTS opened Nevada’s first neurologic music therapy clinic, using music to improve language, movement, speech, sensorimotor skills and cognitive function for people with neurological disorders. Always charting new territory in our community, NMTS continues to prove the power music has in peoples’ lives, gathering stories of lasting change along the way.
