Lapidario Ebraico – Jewish Lapidarium

La collezione, in origine collocata in Laterano, comprende la quasi totalità delle iscrizioni rinvenute negli scavi della Catacomba ebraica di Monteverde, sulla via Portuense, all'inizio del XX secolo. Lo svuotamento della catacomba, che dopo pochi anni crollò su se stessa, permise la salvezza di questo patrimonio epigrafico, fonte inestimabile di notizie sulla comunità ebraica di Roma tra III e IV secolo d.C.

The collection, originally located in the Lateran Palace, includes almost all the inscriptions unearthed in the excavation of the Jewish catacomb in Monteverde, on the Via Portuense, at the beginning of the twentieth century. The emptying of the catacomb, which collapsed after a few years, was the salvation of this heritage, an inestimable source of information on the Jewish community of Rome between the third and fourth century A.D.
