I absolutely love using a microwave kiln to create elegant, one-of-a-kind jewelry pieces! The possibilities are endless when it comes to designing unique glass fusing projects.

In this video, I’ll guide you through the process of making a beautiful dichroic glass cabochon using a microwave kiln (link below). Here’s how I did it:

Step-by-Step Process:

1. Design Layout:
• I started by arranging my glass pieces, ensuring they were about 6mm thick in total. I placed the Dichroic side facing down in this video for the best results.
2. Microwave Kiln Setup:
• After placing the glass in the kiln, I covered it with the kiln lid. I microwaved the setup for 3 minutes initially.
3. Fusing Process:
• After the first 3 minutes, I carefully checked the fusing process every 15-30 seconds to ensure the glass was forming a smooth cabochon dome without sharp grooves.
• Remember to use extreme caution—always wear welder gloves and safety glasses when handling the kiln to avoid injury.
4. Timing Considerations:
• Be careful not to over-microwave, as this can cause the dichroic layer to fade or bubble.
• Every microwave has different timing, so it may take some practice to find the perfect setting for your setup. This is all part of the learning process!

Additional Tips:

• Glass Type: For this project, I used COE96 glass, layering three pieces for the thickness I wanted. You can find more details in the description below.

-paper to glue on pieces of glass and then transfer to kiln paper
-scissors to cut the kiln paper to the size of kiln so the kiln lid doesn't knock off pieces
