A Hidden Forest in Colonial Williamsburg | Bassett Trace Nature Trail | 1.4 Mile Hike to Green Course Clubhouse

The Bassett Trace Nature Trail, nestled in the historic landscape of Colonial Williamsburg, is a somewhat hidden trail system found only a short distance from the Duke of Gloucester, offering hikers and nature lovers a unique opportunity to explore the natural beauty of the area.

When we discovered that this seemingly concealed, trail route winds through a lush forested area, and provides a serene escape from the bustling streets of the restored colonial town, we immediately sought to locate its trailhead, and its shade, on a hot summer day.

As we embarked on our quest, we were quickly greeted with the sights and sounds of an ecosystem that has stood the test of time, offering a glimpse into the past while also encouraging a deeper connection with nature.

The trail's name, "Bassett Trace," is a nod to the historical significance of Burwell Bassett, Martha Washington’s nephew, and a Virginia legislator and congressman.

In later years, throughout the Colonial Williamsburg restoration years, Abby and John D. Rockefellar Jr. eventually purchased and moved into the “Bassett Hall” residence still found in Colonial Williamsburg today. When in town, they would often enjoy the secluded environment that lay conveniently behind the home.

Walking along the Bassett Trace Nature Trail is like stepping into a living canvas painted with the vibrant colors of native wildflowers, birds, butterflies, and the forest’s vast plant and tree life that can be found here.

An unexpected, serene, and educational experience that truly encapsulated the essence of Colonial Williamsburg's commitment to preserving history and nature in harmony. A well-kept nature trail cutting through historic Virginia woodlands, we were truly surprised and delighted to find it so close to the old capitol city of Colonial Virginia.

Whether you're an avid nature enthusiast, a history buff, or simply seeking another peaceful getaway, upon reaching its trailhead, the Bassett Trace Nature Trail will entice you to embrace the tranquility of Colonial Williamsburg’s hidden forest.
