Here's why you should visit Taichung, Taiwan's most underrated city!

This weekend, join us in the sunny city of Taichung 臺中市 for part 4 of our Taiwan Travel Guide 2024!

From Kaohsiung, we take the train northwest to Taichung City as we finally get to relax in the best hotel we’ve stayed in so far in Taiwan. We also explore Taichung's coolest cafes, traditional markets, and the most local restaurants!

On our first night, we visit Miyahara, a red-brick building built in 1927 by Miyahara Takeo, a Japanese ophthalmology doctor. Miyahara was known to be the largest ophthalmology clinic in Taichung during the Japanese colonial period. Now it is a sprawling, otherworldly cafe and restaurant that attracts sweet tooths from around the world.

Where else to go in Taichung? Anywhere with street food and drinks. Taichung Second Market 臺中市公有第二零售市場, Archie Traditional Noodles from 1918 阿棋 三代福州意麵老店-台中第二市場在地人氣小吃, and Happy Banana Bakery 幸福蕉點 are top of mind.

What we love about Taichung? Many midcentury buildings are repurposed into the most interesting coffee shops, bookstores, and art galleries. 1035 Collab, Fuji Cafe 富吉珈琲, Fourth Credit Union 台中市第四信用合作社, 潮返書店, and Tamp Temper are must-visits in downtown Taichung.

For dinner, we make reservations for roast duck at Xiang Duck Taichung in Gongyi 享鴨 烤鴨與中華料理 台中公益店.

We also check out Ralph’s favorite Michelin-rated porkchop at 范記金之園草袋飯 總店. The biggest, best pork chop ever!
