🎥Üsküdar is a historic district located on the eastern shore of the Bosphorus on the Asian side of Istanbul, Turkey. It is bordered by Beykoz to the north, Ümraniye to the east, Kadıköy to the south, and the Bosphorus Strait to the west. Covering an area of 35.7 km² and home to a population of approximately 500,000 people, Üsküdar is one of Istanbul's most densely populated and historically significant districts.
The history of Üsküdar dates back to the 7th century BCE. It was originally established by Phoenicians and Megarians as a trading colony called "Chrysopolis" (Golden City). During the Byzantine Empire, it was known as "Skutari", meaning "shield" in Latin, reflecting its role as a military outpost. Under the Ottoman Empire, Üsküdar became a major hub for military, trade, and religious activities, serving as the gateway to Asia.
Byzantine Period: Üsküdar was one of the Byzantine Empire’s most crucial trade and military centers on the Bosphorus. During this period, monasteries, churches, and public baths were built.
Ottoman Period: Üsküdar became a key staging ground for Ottoman military expeditions to Anatolia and the Middle East. Several iconic Ottoman architectural landmarks such as the Mihrimah Sultan Mosque, Şemsi Paşa Mosque, and Valide Mosque were constructed.
Republican Era: After the foundation of the Republic of Turkey, Üsküdar underwent a process of modernization. Key transport infrastructures like the Bosphorus Bridge (1973), Marmaray (2013), and Eurasia Tunnel (2016) turned Üsküdar into a central hub for Istanbul's transport network.
Historical Landmarks;
Maiden’s Tower: A symbol of Istanbul, located on a small island in the Bosphorus.
Mihrimah Sultan Mosque: Built by Mimar Sinan for Mihrimah Sultan, daughter of Suleiman the Magnificent.
Şemsi Paşa Mosque: A seaside mosque designed by Mimar Sinan, renowned for its simple yet elegant architecture.
Yeni Valide Mosque: A baroque-style Ottoman mosque built by the mother of Sultan Ahmed III.
Ayazma Mosque: An 18th-century mosque built by Sultan Mustafa III, known for its unique Ottoman-Baroque design.
Üsküdar is one of Istanbul’s most significant districts, with a rich history dating back to ancient times. As a bridge between Asia and Europe, it has played a pivotal role in the Byzantine, Ottoman, and Republican periods. Its cultural heritage, stunning Bosphorus views, and modern transportation network make it a must-visit destination. From iconic landmarks like the Maiden's Tower to architectural gems like the Mihrimah Sultan Mosque, Üsküdar showcases the beauty and depth of Istanbul's history.
