Read this real experience-
"That is solely because Noida is in an industrial belt, alongside having large open drains with unchecked waste being disposed off. most of it releases toxic sulfur fumes, or Sulphur dioxide gas/ rotten egg gas. Now this gas is corrosive in nature.

But this gas alone doesn't harm copper as such. The water from the evaporator coils which are copper (the indoor unit) gets in contact with sulfur gas and then causes corrosion over time at the brazed joints.

Over time, this continues, and you will end up having small holes which aren't visible to naked eye, unless you put soapy water solution and see bubbles coming out, or in major case- see oil traces from the region.

Hence, gas refilling is required, and in most cases- the evaporator needs replacement.

I had been staying near Noida Sector 16 for 18 years and believe me- despite having the best of air conditioners at my home like General (window and splits both), Hitachi window Acs, and Daikin (imported ones, which are way superior to the Indian make), i had to refill gas just after one year of purchase. Splits had to have indoor coils replaced, because they were beyond repair.

Even though i had the costliest Acs at home, i thought the quality might withstand the corrosion, which they did for like 3 years. Then it was like an alternate year affair to have to spend 13000 INR for coils for Daikin and General.

People around me would go for cheapest Acs (the ones that would cost 1/3 the price of the ones I had) and would replace them every few years, which somehow started making sense to me."
