A Brooklyn Park man considered to be one of Minnesota's biggest heroin dealers is in police custody and charged with third-degree murder. Jaime McClellan, 31, is accused of supplying the heroin that killed a Medina man.
"Today is a win-win for law enforcement and a win for the residents of Hennepin and Anoka counties," said Hennepin County Sheriff Rich Stanek.
McClellan is also a suspect in a heroin overdose death in Anoka County. He was charged Friday in Anoka County District Court with first-degree intent to sell a controlled substance and second-degree possession of a controlled substance.
"Drug dealers will be held accountable for the deaths that result from the poison that they are peddling," said Stanek.
According to the criminal complaint, a man was found dead in his Medina home last October from a heroin overdose. The complaint says a witness told investigators that the defendant told the victim this was "good stuff." Investigators searched the victim's computers and iPhone and found text messages linking the victim to McClellan.
Deputies used confidential informants to buy heroin from McClellan over the next two months, leading to the arrest, the complaint said. Authorities say McClellan had 15 grams of heroin on him. Officers also seized nearly $350,000 from a Plymouth storage locker.
"It's bittersweet because someone is dead," said Maj. Pete Dietzman with the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office. "We are doing our job day in and day out, investigating narcotics crimes, and as a result of that, you're dealing with the tragedies of these situations."
Court records show that McClellan lived at an apartment complex on Zane Avenue in Brooklyn Park. He faces up to 25 years in prison if convicted for the third-degree murder charge.
