China is rolling out its mass surveillance program previously reserved for Uighurs to other minorities across the country and the policy could be exported across the globe, according to the Australian Strategic Policy Institute's Michael Shoebridge.

Sky News revealed on Sunday a major security leak that uncovered the Chinese government’s mass surveillance of another ethnic minority group.

Chinese activists have now exposed a new facial recognition database targeting the Tujia and Miao Autonomous Zone in the city of Tongren in central southern China.

According to a former cyber security contractor there are four different systems operating in the region, with approximately 110,000 people being targeted by this mass privacy breach.

Mr Shoebridge told Sky News the revelations highlight how China is expanding its program of surveillance.

“It’s the future of what they’ll be doing for every Chinese citizen,” Mr Shoebridge said.

He also flagged the potential for China to export this surveillance model across the globe given its involvement with its overseas corporations.

“The export product they create brings that surveillance regime to places they export it to,” he said.
