CHINA: BEIJING: GERMAN CHANCELLOR SCHROEDER VISIT

German Chancellor, Gerhard Schroeder, arrived in Beijing on Wednesday for talks with the Chinese leadership.

China is now becoming embroiled in the war in Kosovo.

And Schroeder needs to persuade China to back U-N peace moves for Kosovo despite NATO's
bombing of the Chinese Embassy in Belgrade.

German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder has arrived in Beijing for meetings with the Chinese leadership.

Kosovo is top of the agenda, with NATO and China still arguing after NATO accidentally blew up the Chinese embassy in Belgrade.

China, enraged by the resulting three deaths, has said the bombing of Yugoslavia must end before the U-N Security Council can discuss peace moves.

Despite opposition from five NATO members on the Security Council, Beijing has been trying to get the Security Council to condemn the Embassy attack.

Meanwhile, Chancellor Schroeder is facing waning public support in Germany for the war.

Enthusiasm has dropped since NATO's mistaken bombing of the Chinese embassy last Friday.
