I believe this is now a traditional katana hilt is attached to the blade. Just one peg ( sometimes two) through the full tang.
Tight fitting wooden peg, bamboo most likely. Easy to disassemble and service/oil inside the handle.
This blade has a decent thickness and good tang. I like the well shaped blade tip - Kissaki styled I believe, Kamasu.

By the way,
In one of the episodes Zatoichi disassembled the sword, cleaned the hilt and tang with sake then assembled it back similarly…
