In one of the most profound moments in Scripture (John 12:27–28), Jesus reveals the depth of His humanity and divinity. Though His soul was troubled, He didn’t run from suffering — instead, He said, “Father, glorify Your name.” This powerful scene reminds us of the purpose, obedience, and love of Christ as He prepared to fulfill His mission on the cross.
What does it mean?
1. “Now my soul is troubled…”
Jesus is feeling deep distress emotionally, spiritually, and physically because He knows His suffering and death on the cross are near. This shows us His humanity. He wasn’t a distant, emotionless figure He truly felt pain, fear, and sorrow.
2. “What shall I say? ‘Father, save me from this hour’?”
He’s wrestling with the reality of what’s to come. But instead of asking to escape it, He reflects: “Should I even ask to be saved from this hour?” He recognizes that this suffering is part of the mission He came for.
3. “But for this purpose I have come to this hour.”
Jesus knew that His death was necessary not just as a tragedy, but as the very reason He came: to save the world through the cross.
4. “Father, glorify your name.”
Despite the pain, Jesus chooses to submit. He wants God the Father to be glorified through His obedience, even if it means suffering. His mission wasn’t self-preservation; it was about God’s glory and our salvation.
