ColorWheel Art is thrilled to present to you Master Ku, one of the most renowned "Lingnan Style" (嶺南畫派) Chinese painting gurus in Asia.

In each week's youtube episode, Master Ku will teach you easy to learn drawing principles and step-by-step practical techniques of Lingnan style Chinese painting. So what is Lingnan Style? It is a style of painting developed in the southern region of China in the late 19th century. It was influenced by Western impressionism, and uses bright, vibrant coloring and expressive freestyle strokes to reveal the exquisite details and spirit of the drawing to the audience. Lingnan style is revolutionary and innovative, contrasting with the traditional Chinese ink wash painting.

In this week's 10-minute workshop, Master Ku continues to demonstrate how to draw Poinsettia, the typical western holiday festive flora, in Lingnan style.

Poinsettia, the “December birth” flower, symbolizes purity, good cheer and success. Its star-shaped leaf pattern symbolizes the Star of Bethlehem, and the red color represents the Blood of Christ. Master Ku likes to mix Eastern painting style with Western theme. This is fun and meaningful, truly a cultural exchange in art.

In Part 2 of the Poinsettia Holiday Special series, you will get to learn a lot from Master Ku: 1) how to prepare the right mix of color to present the upper stem; 2) how to draw the green leaves in freestyle and bold shapes with ink, and 3) how to link up two different textures of a stem by adding a “connector/hook” in between.
