India: Odisha Celebrates Historic Two-Day Rath Yatra After 53 Years

The Indian state of Odisha's pilgrim town, Puri is celebrating Lord Jagannath’s 147th annual Rath Yatra (chariot procession) festival today. The festival is spanning over two days after 53 years. The Rath Yatra was held for two days last time in 1971. India's President Droupadi Murmu will join thousands of other pilgrims in Puri to witness the Rath Yatra. This morning, the chariot rolled out from the 400-year-old Lord Jagannath temple in Gujarat’s Jamalpur area. Union Home Minister Amit Shah performed the "mangla aarti" and Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel performed "pahind vidhi", the ritual of cleaning the way for the chariot using a golden broom.
