Christopher was born in 1738 on Staten Island.
He served as a colonel in the loyalist forces during the American Revolution.
He was captured twice by American patriots and imprisoned in Burlington, New Jersey. After he was released he confronted a 15 year old servant who may have signaled patriots across the Arthur Kill by holding a candle by a window on the second floor. Legend says he threw her down a flight of stairs and her spirit along with Christopher's, reenacting their deadly struggle.
From looking at my photos, I have seen apparitions. I came across something in one of the windows of a child holding a rabbit by a candle.
In the basement of this house is his son Thomas's headstone which has been weather beaten.
It is said that in the garden in the back of the house, Revolutionary soldiers roam the grounds.
Also, an old Lenape indian burial ground, the largest pre-european burial ground was discovered on the same grounds.
The Conference house name came to be after the September 11, 1776 failed peace conference between loyalists and patriots--including Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, Edward Rutledge. This house was declared a National Landmark and the Conference House Park was created in 1926.
