This is a wonderful aria for the bass which occurs a few minutes into act 1 of Richard Strauss's opera "Die Scweigsame Frau" (Libretto by Stefan Zweig), written in 1933-5. It really brings out the creativity of Zweig in the libretto, bit also Strauss who really pulls out all of the stops to make this a great piece of music.
