Here is the story of Ashton - He had infection after infection resulting in symptoms such as sensory issues and mood changes. Wherever they searched for an answer they were always re-directed back to the mental health route to explain his symptoms. However, his parents knew it wasn't right and kept searching for the answer regardless of a doctor telling them they were "searching for a ghost". PANDAS (Pediatric autoimmune neuropsychiatric disorders associated with streptococcal infections) is an autoimmune disease that affects 1 in 200 children. It is commonly misdiagnosed as a mental health issue opposed to a medical issue. Many parents spend years searching for doctors who will acknowledge and treat PANDAS, all the while their child is left to suffer from the debilitating disease. It is time for medical professionals to become aware of PANDAS and begin with helping to treat these families. This is one of many families' journeys with PANDAS. #OurPANDASJourney
