🌒 What Is a Blood Moon?

A Blood Moon is the common name for the reddish-colored Moon seen during a total lunar eclipse. It happens because Earth moves directly between the Sun and the Moon, and sunlight passing through Earth’s atmosphere gets bent (refracted) and stripped of blue light, leaving mostly red and orange hues to illuminate the Moon’s surface.


🌖 Why This Happens

During a total lunar eclipse, the Moon passes completely through Earth’s umbra (the darkest part of its shadow). At totality, direct sunlight is blocked, so only the refracted red spectrum of sunlight reaches the Moon — giving it a coppery-red or “blood-red” appearance.


⏱️ Duration

The totality phase — when the Moon appears reddish — will last roughly 58 minutes. But the entire eclipse, including penumbral and partial stages, spans multiple hours (about 5 hours 30+ minutes).

This Blood Moon will be visible from many regions around the world where the Moon is above the horizon at the time, including parts of:
