Why do ears hurt when flying?

Have you ever been on a plane? Did you remember that they encourage us to chew gum when the plane is taking off and landing? What do you think is the reason behind that?
The reason behind that is to lessen or prevent earache. To explain it further, let’s review first the parts of the ear.

Our ear has an eardrum and it is positioned between two air-filled spaces which are the ear canal and the middle ear. Whenever sound waves enter our ear, they make eardrums vibrate and eventually interpreted as sounds by our brain. Air is present in both sides of the eardrum and forces in the ear canal and middle ear can affect its position.

Before takeoff, the air pressure in the ear canal and middle ear are the same. When taking off, the air pressure in the air canal begins to drop. And because of that, the eardrum is being pushed outward since pressure in the ear canal is less than the pressure in the middle ear, causing pain in the ear.
