Elk in Kentucky (Bell County, KY) | Kentucky Life | KET

2022 marks the 25th anniversary of elk restoration in Kentucky.  In December 1997, seven Rocky Mountain Elk where brought from Kansas to Kentucky and released in front of a crowd of 4000 by then Governor Paul Patton.  Over the next few years more than 1500 elk were captured in western states and released in the Elk Restoration Zone in eastern Kentucky.  Years of research and management have made it possible for Kentucky to have a thriving Elk herd, hunting and wildlife viewing, and now Kentucky has given elk to other eastern states restoring this iconic species back to its native home.
