What to do in Belgium?
If you're into some boat adventures for your next trip, we have two very endearing locations for you to visit in Belgium.
The first one is the Strépy-Thieu boat lift, and the second one is not very far from it, and it's the Ronquières inclined plane.
Both of these constructions make it easier for boats to pass on the Brussels-Charleroi Canal and the Canal du Centre.
With 54 waterways in Belgium, there have to be some types of solutions created for the easier passing of watercraft.
Below, we will delve a little deeper into more information about both of these locations and how they came to be.

Strépy-Thieu boat lift
The Strépy-Thieu Boat Lift is located on the branch of the Canal du Centre in Belgium's Hainaut.
This lift is a giant masterpiece of engineering, which doubles as a popular tourist hot spot, making it even more exciting.
This construction was finished back in 2002 after around 20 years of construction and now replaces the wanky lifts and locks used to service the river.
This lift is 150 meters tall, and it has two massive caissons which carry the boats from the lowest point of the canal to the highest point of more than 73 meters above and the other way around.
Each of the caissons can lift more than 8,000 tons of ship weight and liquid.

Ronquières inclined plane
The Ronquières inclined plane is located on the Charleroi-Bruxelles canal, which is in the Hainaut province in Wallonia. It's in the Braine-le-Comte municipality and takes its name from Ronquières village. The Ronquières inclined plane has a drop of around 70 meters which is pretty unique. If you want to simply understand how it works, you can visit the Visitor Centre and try its lift which is basically a glass bridge that stands over the canal area. If you manage to go there on Sunday, you can go by the inclined plane by boat.
However, before you put your wellies on and jump on a boat, let us indulge you with some short and sweet facts about the most inclined plane in the world:
It has two tanks of 91 by 12 metres full of water which weigh about 5,000 and 5,700 tons in total.
These tanks take heavy boats and narrowboats over the distance of 1,432 metres between the lower and higher levels of the inclined plane.
You can visit the 150 metres tower by the plane which can be seen from very far away. If you go there, you can experience a breathtaking panorama view.
