Brown-hooded Kingfisher (Halcyon albiventris) Bird Call Video - Olifants River

This Brown-hooded Kingfisher (Halcyon albiventris) was perched beautifully on a windy day in the Kruger National Park. It sat still for a few minutes, which allowed us to get some nice photographs and video. It was perched amongst some trees right next to the road, opposite the Olifants River.

The Brown-hooded Kingfisher is a charming resident of the Kruger National Park, adding a splash of colour to its diverse ecosystem. With its distinctive brown head and azure-blue wings, this small kingfisher is a delight to spot along the park's waterways and wooded areas. It's known for its distinctive call, a series of melodious, high-pitched whistles that pierce through the tranquil ambiance of the park.

Inhabiting the riverine forests and woodlands of the Kruger National Park, the Brown-hooded Kingfisher feeds primarily on insects and small vertebrates. Despite its name, it rarely fishes, preferring instead to hunt from a perch, scanning the ground below for potential prey. This species is highly adaptable, able to thrive in various habitats within the park.
