Every day in the news we see more and more stories regarding opioid addiction and its devastation and impact on our local communities. In response to this growing concern, OrthoCarolina and the OrthoCarolina Research Institute (OCRI) are taking a proactive approach to be a part of the solution. This week we will kick off a new study called Carolinas Opioid Reduction Effort (the CORE project).

To provide a little history, the initial idea was developed after a patient who had had his life ruined by opioid addiction came to Dr. Nady Hamid seeking shoulder surgery without opioids. After much consideration, an alternate pathway was developed for this patient. Given the epidemic occurring with opioid addiction in the US, a pilot study in shoulder arthroplasty followed in order to provide more detailed evidence around the new pain pathway. Results found that patients treated with the opioid-free pain management regimen had less or equivalent levels of pain as those treated with opioid medications as well as fewer side effects.

The CORE project will allow us to now explore the non-opioid pain pathway across all adult subspecialties and a variety of surgeries. The program will take a couple years to complete. The CDC reports that one in five patients who take 10 days of opioids will still be taking them 12 months later. In response to those statistics, the ultimate goal of this project is to provide, through research and evidence, alternative pain management options for OrthoCarolina patients facing orthopedic surgery and the medical community at large.
